The University of Maryland College Park, also known as Maryland, UMCP, UMD or UM, is a public research university located in College Park, which is a city in Prince George’s County, situated in the US state of Maryland, with a population estimates at a number of nearly 25 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The city is best known for the fact that it is home of the University of Maryland College Park and for the fact that since 1994, has also been home to the ‘’Archives II’’ facility of the U.S. National Archives.
UMCP was founded in 1856, as the Maryland Agricultural College (MAC), and it is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. Due to the fact that its enrollment has reached number of more than 36 000 students, Maryland College Park has been named the largest university in the state, as well as the largest one in the Washington Metropolitan Area. UMCP has been recognized as a `Public Ivy`, currently being ranked among the top national universities in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report rankings, being constantly ranked one of the world’s top 100 universities by the Academic Ranking of World Universities report, as well.
The University of Maryland College Park offers its students 127 undergraduate degree programs and 112 graduate degrees through 13 colleges and schools, among which there are: College of Arts and Humanities, Robert H. Smith School of Business, School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, also hosting `Living and Learning` programs, through which the students are allowed to live in the same residential community, take specialized courses, and perform research.
The athletic teams from UMCP are known as the Maryland Terrapins, who participate in NCAA’s Division I, in various sports, the university being a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The university has experienced victory in many of its sports, including in football, in which the Terrapins own 9 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, and in men’s basketball, in which they have 11 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (1993–2004) and eight consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins (1996–2004), being considered one of Maryland’s most popular sports.

Norris - retired United States Navy SEAL and awarded Medal of Honor, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable in various fields, after attending UMCP.
